I agree that there are less postings and some of the topical debates are missing but I'll happily trade that for a Forum that does not contain sectarian/political/deliberately provokative threads.

Very well put, but we are all big enough and ugly enough to have discussions on local matters without being silly.

Discussion threads only got closed or deleted when people who should know better posted things that they knew would be removed, thankfully the mods rooted the idiots out and removed them, they can only give so many warnings before having to act.
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

Or when topical articles posted to invite mature and considered debate descended instead into extreme tit for tat comments

    Indeed
It is sad to have to accept that the general population of Northern Ireland are cut from that same cloth as our politicians and conclude that the country is doomed while this is the case. I look forward to my release date when my caring duties are no longer needed. That will give me the chance to escape back to mainland Britain to resume my life there

Christ John, it's not that bad.

Certainly not bad enough to warrant "escaping" to England.

Actually I was just listening to an interesting programme on radio there about gay rights. A good bit was devoted to our former MP Iris Robinson. You know the one that had the affair and condemned homesexuality as an abomination that made her "physically sick".

Can I come with you John. This place is beyond help.

I don't know but I think the mainland has its own problems. Sometimes the grass is not always greener on the other side. Yes we do have our problems and yes the vasy majority of our MPs, MLAs and Councillors are useless but when you see some of the antics of some of the elected representatives across the water I don't believe we are any worse off.

Surely it's the politicians who are cut from the same cloth as their constituents, since it's they who elect them?

Depends where you live in England. Plenty of places there are worse than anywhere here. Barnsley, Bolton, Oldham, South Shields ... Oh yeah we could go on all night.

"general population of Northern Ireland are cut from that same cloth as our politicians"

Is that not a bit of a sweeping statement?

Most people I know couldn't care less about local politics. I am more interested in topics such as investment, new jobs, interest rates, etc.

I think this sums up how most people in NI feel about "our" politicians:

I'd say the councillors are funnier than that bloke.

Unless voter fraud is more prevalent than I thought, people elect the councillors.
