M&S umbrella -how to lock open

Found an M&S umbrella, but can't work out how to lock it in position when open.

Can't see a catch which normally locks an umbrella open.

Can't see anything obvious broken that could be missing.

All I can see is thin piece of cord string going from top to bottom part which moves up shaft.

Any ideas how to lock this umbrella in open position ?

shove the collar ( where the spokes join in the middle ) down hard towards the tip.

has anyone lost an M&S umbrella recently ?

I've just got it working, not way you said.

It's an automatic spring umbrella, press button at bottom and it opens automatically, very flash !

I need another umbrella, all my other ones have been destroyed in wind & rain.

Press button on handle first time, umbrella automatically raises & opens.

Press this button 2nd time, umbrella automatically closes (while still raised), you pull it down to reload spring mechanism.

Very flash, only used manual umbrellas before.

No, in this weather you need a good hat and coat, not an umbrella.

A vented umbrella copes better in windy conditions, like these:

But obviously search for better prices.;)
