Asking for a Raise in Limit - High Risk?

in Credit cards
I've had a couple of credit cards for about two years now but I want to ask for a raise.
The one I need the raise on did have a default payment as the CC company simply didn't collect the direct debit. I called them up, they apologised and wrote off the £4 that was outstanding.
However the limit (which was £2000) has now reduced to just £500.
If I make a few more payments on this card, then pay them off via a new Direct Debit (which they set up), will the credit limit go back up or should I call and ask for it to be put back up without doing any spending on it?
It's a Halifax Clarity Credit Card, which I only used a few times when abroad about a year ago, then not really at all since.
I have opened another credit card since, which gets paid off in full every month.
Thanks

I think you should call and find out why they reduced your credit limit in the first place.
When you understand that, you will be much better placed to consider if they will increase it.0 -
They won't raise it for at least six months - a friend and I both have Clarity Cards, both had our limits cut to £550 for no plausible reason (no missed payments or adverse history on any accounts). Halifax simply stated it was following a "review" and that they'd consider a new limit in six months time.
We had both been using the card abroad for cash advances, which is all the card is used for, so I can only assume this had something to do with it (I was away for most of October between Asia/South America and took a lot of cash using the card).0
