  • Its depend on you mean what are your likes? Because i am a vegetarian and i always make recipes with fresh vegetable and fruits. I can't live without them. Because these recipes have much vitamins of us which can get rid of many diseases. These are also cheap. So i don't like chicken, beef etc.

My OH is away for a few days, so I am attempting to spend as little as humanly possible on food, as a sort of challenge to myself :money:. I managed to completely skip food shopping last week but need to go now. I have something planned for the next 2 nights, and have mince in the freezer to make something for when he is back on Thursday (lasagna probably as have the sheets too so really just need onions, couple of carrots and cheese). That leaves me 3 nights. So it go me thinking, what are the absolutely cheapest meals.

I assume veggie (in any case we buy organic meat so cheapness goes out the window. I have rice and pasta, tinned tomatoes, frozen peas, and all the basic oils and spices. We often resort to filled pasta (in fact I have tons of that so might just do that one night!). What else? Baked potatoes?

I am thin so need to watch I don't inadvertently diet. Although we often menu plan, I think we sometimes accidentally plan a lot of expensive meals.

Might be worth scouring Amazon or eBay for a cheap student recipe book (you might find Kindle ones for free!), or looking online at that kind of thing. Lots are bound to be based on cheap recipes requiring minimal, unfancy ingredients - yet with enough calories to keep up with a late teen/early 20's metabolism.

E.g. http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Dorm-Room-Gourmet-Cookbook-ebook/dp/B008161J1O/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1391270398&sr=1-2&keywords=student+recipes perhaps? Seems it's designed for students with no main kitchen facility, which might come in handy for recipes that you can whip up in the microwave or similar quite quickly. I know I often can't be bothered to cook up a whole "proper" meal when OH is away.

Nice one, it's on my kindle already - a free too :T. I am actually just heading out to shops now as I am out of milk so might just have to make it up this time, and research that book for next time.

I don't actually mind cooking for myself (I normally make the one thing OH won't eat) but it's not normally done on the basis of low cost.

Thanks, very useful link. A lot of the veggie mains wouldn't count as a meal for me (mushroom soup, for example) but spanish omelette or the risotto would. I think my portion sizes might be bigger than they suggest though :o

One of my cheap veggie meals is chickpea & butternut squash curry. I usually add a handful of red lentils as well. It's one of the few veggie meals that I do that my DH doesn't complain about for having no meat in it.

Dhal is one of my favourite meals. Mixed bean chilli is another cheap, easy and filling one.
