One tin cheapest corned beef (used to be 39p in Tesco, might be a bit more now), one small to medium onion (10p), either 1lb potatoes from a big (therefore economical) sack, or 3 tins economy everyday potatoes (sliced or chopped), or one whole pack Sainsbury economy instant mash (say 45p for the spuds), one tomato (sliced, to go on top), about 1oz grated cheese (also to go on top, after tomato), small qty oil to fry the onion.
Hardly need to post my recipe, as it is plain from the above. Should feed 4-5 quite comfortably, for around £1.40, i.e. 35p per serving.
If you have any hash left then you MUST try corned beef hash on toast. It's gorgeous when it's been under the grill with a bit of brown sauce. I haven't had this for, hmmm, must be 20 years, Crikey!:A Every moment is a gift. That's why we call it the present.!:A

I like the hash cooked in the frying pan inc. spuds and onions and I then add a poached egg to the top. Or you can break the eggs over the top of the hash and cook that way.0

Corned beef and rice
Chop an onion and about 4 tomaotoes, fry them off, then add:
1 tin of corned beef (chopped up), 1 beef stock cube, a teaspoon of curry powder and a teaspoon of all purpose seasoning.
Cook through breaking up the corned beef, then add some boiling water, enough to help it go into a 'mushy' consistency.
Heath through and serve with boiled rice and sweetcorn :drool:0 -
corned beef hash has already been mentioned in the meal plans, but it was accidently called Corned Beef ash.Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money but you can't get more time0

Hi, I'm new here so hoping this is the right section to post in, sorry if not!
I'm on a seriously tight budget (living alone on a part time income, self employed the rest of the time but struggling with high rent costs here, so I rely on housing benefits, which are due to be cut by about £26 a month)
Basically I need to cut down my food budget, which means keeping to about 50p per meal, stretching to £1 for a main meal possibly.
I want to eat healthily, but not enthralled with the idea of living on salad or beans on toast!
I'm also limited by having a very small fridge and only a mini freezer, so cooking from scratch and then saving the rest is quite hard sometimes.
Does anyone have any tasty (ideally healthy) recipe suggestions that would come out at about £1 or less for one portion?
Since I'm starting the thread, here is one recipe from me that I've found to be good and cheap:
Satay noodles for one.
One pack of Tesco value noodles (the 10p ones), half a tin of value sweetcorn, dash of soy sauce, dash of oyster sauce, spoonful of peanut butter
Any help much appreciated!0 -

Tuna, pasta, onions, sweetcorn and peppers.
I made a 2 tin tuna, 300g pasta, 2 onions, 1 tin sweetcorn, 1 red pepper mix and have had it for lunch every day for 4 days
Saved me a fortune this week on food.0
