PWS/1909/Second Nature kitchens - does anyone have one?

Hi

We are looking at getting a kitchen from PWS's 1909 range. Does anyone have any experience of the company, or has anyone bought a 1909 kitchen? I'm having a bit of trouble finding reviews!

Also, is there a cheaper way to buy from this company? They don't have the 1909 range on DIY kitchens and the quotes I'm getting have been all over the place.

Thanks very much :)

Anything you buy from PWS range (Second nature, Metris or 1909) is only as good as the carcases they are supplied with and the people you buy them from.

Looks like you are after a classic inframe look. Why not look at local independents supplying other similar products.

  • Hi there,

We are just installing a 1909 kitchen and it's been a real nightmare!!

The biggest problem is the supplier who forgot to inform us that many of the lovely details in 1909 are 'options'. As a result, we didn't receive them with our kitchen.

When we spoke to PWS they weren't interested. I politely pointed out that their online brochure is very misleading since it doesn't indicate what is and isn't included. It is not unreasonable to assume that you get what's in the pictures (in terms of cabinet detail) so be careful.

In terms of the paint finish, we are not convinced it is very durable and should have opted for a plain kitchen and employed a professional to finish the units.

Everything is a learning curve, but my advice would be really spend time with your supplier, making sure you now EXACTLY what you are getting.

We certainly wouldn't buy a PWS kitchen again.

    Thats an interesting insight.

To go for a full spec 1909 is going to cost serious money and you are really better of going elsewhere that offers you the detail and flexibility that you would expect to receive at the sorrt of price point that 1909 kitchens come in at.

    Hi

I have just looked on the 1909 website. First impressions are that it does look very nice, but I think there are quite a few things that are worth keeping in mind.

As with all PWS products, all they actually make is the doors and components. The most important part of a kitchen unit they don't make. So its absolutely impossible to say whether a PWS / Second Nature / 1909 kitchen is any good or not. It really comes down to your retailer, as to whether they put the PWS stuff on a good quality carcass and whether they are any good at design and customer service.

The 1909 product is aimed fair and squarely at the 'hand made' kitchen market, with the door in frame style, solid Oak drawer boxes (dependent on your retailer) and butt hinges on the doors (again dependent on your retailer). But at the end of the day it is still a component product where everything is made for stock. Where as a proper hand made kitchen has everything made to order, therefore, hand made should also mean precisely 'made to measure' and that you can have anything you want (any size, any colour, any design, etc.).

I only looked on the website for a minute or 2 and there were little things I started to see that even if I didn't know it was from PWS, told me this was a component kitchen; thickness of doors, frames put next to each other where hand made wouldn't be, etc.

My last point is, the typical example prices that are on the 1909 website are really in the realms of a proper hand made kitchen from sensible independent kitchen specialists who specialise in bespoke hand made kitchens. You just need to find them!
  • I am sorry I dont think you can blame PWS who supply manufacturers the 1909 components because you either didnt ask for the features you wanted or they wernt supplied by your supplier. I have dealt with PWS for years and find them an excellent supplier kitchen components.
  • I have to say that I agree completely with bellabella59 that PWS cannot be blamed because the end user did not get the features they were expecting to get, they should address their concerns to the retailer they were dealing with. Regarding the painted finishes used in on 1909 kitchens, they are almost certainly as sturdy as any other painted finish. I believe each order is batch painted prior to delivery so colour-matching should not be a problem either and it would almost certainly be less expensive that having a complete kitchen painted by hand after installation.
Finally, there is a huge variation in the 'hand made' kitchen sector and many so-called hand made kitchens are manufactured using doors and other accessories that are bought-in by the kitchen 'maker'. Likewise, the quality of the kitchen cabinet can vary enormously too. There are 70 or so showrooms in the UK selling 1909 kitchens so one should probably not judge a brand by what looks like the failings of a particular kitchen retailer.
