You're not the only one!! :D

Glad it finally made it through.

    Finger's crossed Wookie :D

I'm quite annoyed with myself over it. I submitted the return a while ago but left the paying of it and didn't remember until this evening. Normally I do one after the other. No idea why this time I didn't.

Mine got past the first stage and then dropped out again. Trying again! So annoying.
Well done to everyone who did manage to get through.
  • My payment for the grand sum of £1.40 would just not go through. Tried several times, would take all card details, do the verified by visa security thing then go to internal server error.

    Here's hoping I don't get a £100 fine for the sake of £1.40, grrr!
If my posts have random wrong words, please blame the damn autocorrect not me :D

Now the error message is connection problems...yeah, right! This is driving me mad. Don't know if I should just go to bed and try in the morning or continue trying. Into the penalty time now anyway.

Finally gone through, 4 hours later! Date: 1st Feb. I hope they don't sting me for £100 next.
Anyone who is still struggling, good luck.
    Nite nite.

Surely it would make sense to pay the tax, well before the deadline on the 31st Jan in case of setbacks such as this?

Shouldn't leave it to the last minute, as there are sure to be lots of people doing the same, and the system crashes!

The £100 fine is for late filing of the tax return, not for late payment of the tax due.

If you don't pay the tax due by 31st January, interest will apply (and surcharges once you get more than 30 days overdue), but as long as you have submitted the return there is no £100 penalty.

Ah that's useful to know for the future, what interest rate is charged from 1st Feb?
  • They might not be useful for everyone but there are other ways to pay (I paid my bill on 30th Jan by EFT). There is more info on the HMRC pages at:

    https://www.gov.uk/pay-self-assessment-tax-bill

For EFT you need to know which of the payment centres to send it to (Cumbernauld or Shipley). That info should be on the Tax Return Payment Reminder form the send out in Dec or Jan.

There is NO £100 fine for late payment of income tax - the fine is related to the non-submission of the return. HMRC will levy a 5% surcharge in the 2012/13 tax still outstanding at 28th February - not the payment on account for 2013/14. To the best of my knowledge HMRC charge 3% per annum on late payments.
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who do not.
