they want money if I change supplier

Hi. I am with Economy Energy who supply my gas and electricity. I want to change back to Bristish Gas. I have a PAYG account. EE want me to pay £100 before they will allow BG to take over my supply. Can they do this? Am I tied to them for life if I dont pay this.

If you have been with them less than one year then they do appear to levy this charge (£50 per fuel). You are only 'tied' for twelve months.

Unfortunately you did not notice this when you moved in - when took over the account you could have switched away within 14 days and not ended up with the contract.

How long have you been with them? When you moved in what processes took place to have the meters registered to your name?
  • Thank you for the fast reply. I signed up with them in May last year. A canvasser in the city centre stopped said it was cheaper with them than the big 6. Anyway after his speil I signed. I was told they would take over from British Gas with in four weeks. I hear nothing more. I called the guy that "sold" it to me and he said not to worry as they would send me a new key and card soon. I got the card for the gas in October 2013 and have never had and electric key. So I wanted to get in touch with them and could not find where they are. I found and email address for them on the internet and told them I wasnt happy with theeir service. I said I had no intention of paying a fee to swap supplier. They didnt reply so about December after I had approached BG I forwarded the emaisl to them again. I said I was not happy with their non service, if there was a problem I had no way of getting in touch with them, still they didnt reply.

Then today I had notification from BG that EE was not allowing the swap over. To date they have not responded to my emails and I still have not had an electric key for the top up and I am still using the Bristish Gas one.

I have never ever found a canvasser in a shopping centre cheaper than what I pay. If you don't know what you are using then you'll get conned - which you obviously have been.
You really need to find out what tariff you are on and what the T&C's are but if you signed then tough, you've got to either see out the rest of the contract or pay the penalty - lets hope it was just for one year and not longer.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers
  • I have tried reading all the small print and can not find a time scale for the contract. I will have a closer look and hope I am not tied for ever.
