    No don't!! I think yours was basically correct except you made the mistake of subtracting the forces instead of adding them. Easily good enough for an A these days ;)

    Thanks to those who tried to help, and especially to zagfles whose explanation was indeed the easier to understand.

    Don't worry, this wasn't a continuous assessment question or anything like that - more a revision exercise. The purpose was for us to find out what we didn't know and so to learn from this. We are actively encouraged to seek help & advice on questions we couldn't answer. You don't learn if you don't ask when you don't understand.
    Btw, it was maths rather than physics.

    Gas & lecky bills? No, fortunately I don't have any of those currently to worry about :)


    ETA: ... and yes it should be a plus rather than a minus - I wondered who would be first to spot that :D
