company wish to contact my G.P.

I am after some advice please from anyone who either has experience of their workplace asking for information from their G.P. Or knows anything of my rights ?
I had an accident at work and it has left a long term issue that isn't really resolving itself and has caused a couple of issues at work.
I am not involved in any kind of compensation claim.
my company are asking for my permission to send some kind of questionnaire to my G.P.
I am not entirely happy to give a blanket permission as they may wish to ask questions regarding any area of my health rather than just issues around the accident and treatments , longevity of symptoms and limits it might put on my ability to do my tasks.
I have arranged an appointment with my G.P which unfortunately falls after the meeting arranged by my workplace to discuss this issue.

These are a few of my concerns and questions I could do with help with .
I am not entirely comfortable with a questionnaire being sent to my G.P. and if he is to receive it then I would like to know what the questions are.( The timing of the meeting and my appointment may help facilitate this)
If it is going to be a report that the G.P writes on me or answers to a questionnaire . I would like to see what has been written about me prior to anyone else seeing it and have an opportunity to ask for amendments.
I would like some kind of guarantee that this consent is limited to only this one time and could not for example be assumed to allow a 2nd or 3rd request at some point in the future.
I guess the pretty important thing I need to know is how much this could be used as an opportunity to get me sacked ..

The GP will contact you to ask for your consent. You have the right to view any report or questionnaire and have the right to ask him to remove any information you do not feel pertinent.
It won't be a blanket request for your medical history. That's not permitted. It will probably focus specifically on any short and long term implications from your accident.
No, no one other than your Company should see that information. They may, however, want you to see an independent doctor via occupational health.
As the accident was at work this is standard practice. You say you don't want compensation, but the company have to protect themself and also do right by you. There may be action for them to change something and stop someone else being hurt.

I will try to explain my circumstances ..
I have been seeing a consultant and my last visit ,yesterday was with another consultant at my request. This was I thought going to be the origianl surgeon who operated on me 18 months ago ,however he is a pretty busy guy and I ended up meeting the doctor who assisted with my initial examination prior to operation.
what I am trying to say is that my G.P doesn't know much about what I have been dealing with for the last 6 months ..The last appointment I made with him ended up with me getting a phone call apologising for treatments as he had not realised some stuff had already been done.
The main reason I wish to speak with my G.P. is to find out if he is up to date with my treatments.
Does the report have to come from my G.P or could I ask my G.P to talk with the consultant I have been dealing with ?
I am not really ill ..Just something that won't get better and I think any report will just say let time heal it .0 -
I work in a GP Surgery, and we do these reports all the time. You will have to give your consent and can ask to see it before it is sent. You can also ask your Doctor to amend anything you are not happy with, although what he writes must be factual. He won't embellish or make anything sound worse than it actually is.
Your company can write again and ask for more info within a reasonable amount of time (although I couldn't give you an exact timescale), but again, you can request to see the report before it goes.
If you're not happy, arrange to see your GP to discuss it.

Yes the accident was just about18 months ago.
I had surgery after an accident at work but upon returning to work I suffered another injury during my period of light duties.0 -
Ah, okay. l I don't want to pry into the medical side of things, just wanted to clarify.
You asked can the report be used to get you sacked. Potentially it could be the start of your employer starting a capability process, but that all depends on what your GP decides. It's good you're getting to chat it through with him, as like you said surgery wasn't done by him.
Harsh as it is, the accident happening at work doesn't stop them going down these procedures.

I have returned to working fully ..But was informed yesterday that some of my duties might be slowing my recovery.
I will just have to roll with it I guess.
It is a bit annoying to me ,so I assume it is annoying to my bosses ..I am not taking large amounts of time off and had a period taking antidepressants ( as pain relief, rather than for depression) .. so I will have to assume it is the company just looking to pin down what is wrong with me.
I would be interested to see the report myself as I have been trying to pin it down for the last few months also.0 -
If you want to get an independent view you could push them to refer you via occupational health. I don't know how big a company they are, maybe they would have a company on retainer. I know when I have a medical situation as it were, I always refer to occupational health as IMO they are less open to bias and can look at one situation without seeing a medical history like a GP can. Can work either way though!
Again, not medically prying, they said yesterday that some of your duties may be hindering your recovery. Do you think this is the case?
I know situations like this are annoying. You just want things to get back to normal.
