What to do with £10 000

I have £10 000 to invest and was thinking about an Isa but was unsure if I could open the account with the full amount? Does anyone have any suggestions of the best place for the cash. I don't want anything containing high risks.

Thanks

By high risks do you mean any risks other than inflation? All investments have some risks, and savings accounts suffer from inflation risk over the medium to long term.

In any case, you could put £3000 into a mini cash ISA (savings account) but no more, you could then invest £4000 through a mini stocks and shares ISA and put the rest into an ordinary savings account or invest outside of an ISA wrapper.

The key questions are when do you want to use this money? and how do you define high risk?

I don't mind low risks ie inflation etc. I don't think I will need access to the money but circumstances may change in the future.
  • Have you thought of Index Linked Saving Certs with National Savings?

They are tax free and also beat inflation, return at moment is about 6%:)

you could open a drip feed account - one that is giving higher interest as long as you make a monthly payment.
mini cash isa - 3K - with instant access

What do you consider high risk and what do you consider low risk?

In a given 12 month period, how much would you accept the money falling in value before you get cold feet and pull out?

I would be comfortable losing around £1000 if that assists

Im in a similar position with an "extra" £10k of savings that I would consider placing into a higher risk investment, with hope of achieving more than a 5.95% I could get with icesave etc...

Are their any recommendations as to good quality investments with slighly more risk ?
