    Re: pizza sauce.
I don't like much herbs in mine either so I buy value passata add a touch (teaspoon ish) of sugar and reduce it down.
Or you can use tomato ketchup mixed with some grated carrot for mini ones (I cheat they way sometimes!) and gets veggies in if anyone's fussy x

  • could i use tinned tomatoes muched up in th foodprosesor or would that be too runny ? also i do have a bread maker and make my own bread but what is the cheepest and quickest dough for the pizzas ..... sometimes i need something quick and easy and dont want to wait for it to rise.... or rather the boys dont !
i would like an alternative to the cheep tined meatballs in tomato sauce that myself and their dad could eat .... the smell and sight of the basic tinned is horrid and i hate to think whats in them. its got to work out at the same price or less than the tinned ones though to balance the budget.

i have loved reading th e sugestions carrot in the stews etc i will be doing
thanks again it is great to know im not alone as this was all getting a bit too much for me thankyou

Tinned tomatoes are fine for pizza toppin, if to runny just cook until reduced down. For really quick base use pitta bread Naan bread or French stick.

My son is Autistic and very fussy with food, for the tomato base on pizza I just use plain passata from a carton :)

Depending on how much tomato sauce you want on the pizza you could just use tomato pur!e (22p a tube), or boil up some passata or whizzed down tinned tomatoes with corn flour.

As for meatballs, get some sausages I don't suggest the cheapest with your concerns about quality, but something like Richmond Irish, a breakfast sausage rather than a dinner sausage. Split out of the skin and put into a bowl. Add some spices and herbs of your own choice, if you want a gravy meatball I suggest cumin and maybe paprika. Add to this a vegetable stock cube (the cheap 22p for 10 in sainsbobs and tesco, IMHO they are better than knorr). Role into balls and maybe into a little corn meal (find in ethnic foods aisle for about 70p for a huge bag). Leave in the fridge. I'm assuming you want the same texture as those in the can so make up some gravy (again supermarket cheapie) and boil the balls and gravy together perhaps in the slow cooker to save energy and impart the flavours together.

If you're wanting the Italian style, add oregano, basil and a little olive oil to the sausage meat. Shape into balls and cook in the same way in passata.

Pizzas - dead simple, look up Jamie Oliver's quick dough recipe, it's basically flour, water and yeast whipped in a food processor and left to rise for 30 minutes. Honestly by the time you've heated the oven and prepared your toppings, it will be ready to roll.

Sugar in tomato sauce will take off any harshness as previous posters have said, but a little salt can also work if you're ever using fresh tomatoes that are perhaps past their best.

    Have a look at MSE's own Weezl's website - http://www.cheap-family-recipes.org.uk.

It's a few years old but there a lots of recipes and menu plans to feed a family for £100 a month. Obviously more than that now because of food price increases but there may be some things there that you could use.
