Relaying carpet

Does anyone know if relaying a carpet is DIYable? We have a carpet that has been poorly fitted and the floorboards underneath are rather irregular. I'd like to relay it and take the opportunity while it is up to fix the floorboards, and put hardboard on top with taped joints to prevent air leakage.

You can hire the carpet stretchers and the tool for tamping the carpet down around the edges from most tool hire places - although a brick bolster chisel will do the same job as the edge tool. Expect a bruised knee from the stretcher.

As the carpet has already been cut to size it shouldn't be too difficult.
