High prescription glasses to try on at home

Hi folks,

I'm looking for recommendations as I am buying my other half some glasses for Christmas and as he has -11 sight in both eyes and has glasses thinned as much as possible which is very expensive (hence him having the same glasses for 5 years...), I'd like to get them online. The thing is, it's hard to get the right look and I know a couple of the retailers have try at home services, but these retailers seem to only go to -8.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I was thinking about buying blank frames from glasses direct with their try at home system and then getting them glazed elsewhere, however I'm concerned that this won't be much cheaper...

I'm also getting him contact lenses (he'll always need back up glasses as he's virtually blind) which are very expensive, so I want to get the glasses for as little as possible!!

look at asda opticians- they don't charge extra for thinner lenses. I had 2 pairs complete for £99

Thank you - was that in store or online? I'm happy with either if we can get what we want

Instore. I've saved so much money not having to pay for thinner lenses. I'd certainly recommend both the glasses and the optician (although I can only speak for my local one!).

Follow up time - we went to Asda in Bournemouth on Saturday and found 2 pairs of glasses for him for £99. The optician said it's taking about 2 weeks for them to come in at the moment.

We're very happy so thank you all for your help

Bargain price, wish I could pay that for mine, but not got Asda near to me. Hope your OH is pleased with them.

That's a shame for you.

I was a little suspicious that they might not be as thin as he'd like, but they were 1.72 (or something) which is as thin as I've ever seen.

Think the ones I get from my local optician are 1.9, but the Asda ones sound great for the price.

In case anyone is interested in this, he picked up the glasses and couldn't be happier - they look great, the lenses are thinner than his old ones were and they spent a little time with him after to get the fit right. Thoroughly recommended!

Great to hear that thinner lenses are not more expensive - I paid about £400 for my very high prescription super-thinned lenses about 4 years ago and snapped them in half last night at the nose bridge! :0

Off to asda as soon as they open (in my manky old old old spare pair) to see what they can do for me...

Result! Two really nice pairs for £99 with the 1.74 very thin lenses included in the price
They have ordered them as a priority as I am currently wearing very old glasses that are the wrong prescription so hopefully I'll get them in a few days. Thanks again for the tip!
