Replacing wooden bed slats

Options
I have a metal framed double bed with wooden slats upon which the mattress sits.

The wooden slats don't seem to be particularly strong and droop in the centre, thus causing the mattress itself to sag.

Can anyone suggest the best cost effective way of replacing the slats - e.g. buying ready made ones, or making them myself. I'm no good at DIY but could probably manage cutting up some wood and drilling holes, but I would have no idea what type of wood to get to ensure a firm base, or the best place to source the wood.

Thanks all.

Is there no centre support on the bed?

Istar has a point - if there isn't a support, you could have a go at making one. Also you could try turning the slats over so they bow upwards rather than downwards, this might help.

Thanks. No, there is no central support unfortunately.

Good tip on turning them over though, I will give that a try :)

if it were me i think i'd try to strengthen your existing wooden slats with more tinber scewed to them underneath.
Say the slats you've got now are about 4" wide, well screw to the centre of them something like 2"x1" battens with the narrow side against your slats and the 2" sticking up. That way it shouldn't droop.
