Vodafone default

Options
I have a default with Vodafone from 2009 which was accidental on my part.

Thinking I was nearing the end of my contract, and annoyed with the service I was getting I rang up to cancel. I was asked if I was sure but was never informed how long I had left or how much cancelling would cost me, though I didn't think to ask myself. I thought I'd have paid the remaining month of so off so I just left it. With me moving about at the time, it was only brought to my attention that I had defaulted on a payment of over £300 with them, which was paid off straight away.

In my naivety, it's not until now that I'm looking for a mortgage than I've seen the real importance of trying to get it removed.

I'm just wondering if anyone would have any advice on whether or not I'd have a leg to stand on if it came to me trying to get it removed from my report.

I have recently successfully had a default removed from my record under similar circumstances, however I understand this is quite rare to achieve.

In my case the default was in late 2008 and was for only £49. Mine was originally with O2 but had been sold to Lowell. I had pretty much ignored this until about a month ago (they had not made any contact about this debt for some time), I chose to act since I am also now looking at the possibility of a mortgage in the near future.

I contacted Lowell and advised them of the issues I had with O2, whilst also making it clear I did not acknowledge the debt. I didn't try to catch them on any technicality I simply explained my situation and the issues this may cause with me getting a mortgage etc. I was very surprised to have received a positive resolution.

In my situation the £49 due remained outstanding, I never settled the default.

I would say you have nothing to lose by asking but obviously they have no obligation to help you.

Do you write and cancel your contract?

That is very very unusual, usually a default will only be removed if the company who issue the default makes an error. Are you sure it didn't drop off automatically after six years when it became statute barred.

OP, you have acknowledged that it was your mistake, you are very very unlikely to get the default removed because it is a true history of your credit record.

I understand it is very unusual indeed, but I am completely sure they removed it. I received correspondence back from Lowell advising they would close the account and my credit record would update within 60 days (I think), in reality it took about a week and the account has disappeared on Experian and Callcredit, on Equifax it appears that it is still present as a closed account yet it has been marked as being up-to-date and closed this month!

How very vengeful of them to keep the default on record after you've paid it off.
I also left after getting fed up with their service and they simply couldn't let me go- they were trying to charge me for advance payment on my (cancelled) contract and even claimed that I made some phone calls abroad a month after after I started using my new SIM from the new provider! My vodafone sim was already inactive and number transferred.
Are you sure they are right to chase you for this money?
Vodafone are a nightmare to deal with as their Customer Services are based in the Philippines (I think) and are particularly unhelpful.
Try to get someone based in the UK.
If they refuse get them to send you all the paperwork to prove you owed the money.
    Good luck!

It was all done over the phone.

Looking back at it I feel a bit embarrassed about it all!

Thanks everyone, I will look into contacting them about it.

Of course its not vengeful. It is a default and it is a true record of the OPs credit status for any other company to check.

Absolutely pointless asking for proof of the OPs debt, because he has admitted/acknowledged the debt by what he has said here and the fact that he has paid it.
