Day tariff stopped spinning econ7

Hi all

My normal counter on my economy7 meter seems to have stopped spinning. The low rate is still spinning and is clocking up at this time of night. Nine PM.

Ill monitor again in the morning to see if the meter is clocking up low units 24/7 or if the normal one has stopped spinning and also the timing is off for the low rate.

What is the usual situation here? Is this common?

Cheers

The meter is probably faulty. I would recommend you report this to your supplier so they can get it fixed or replaced.

If you don't then they will eventually find out and can charge you for what you've used based on their estimates.

It's pretty unusual but the meters are not infallible.

It could be the timer is out though and so you are getting Eco 7 at strange times, keep an eye on it. Still worth reporting though.

I'm also 100% that norm has stopped spinning. The way I discovered was checking a recent estimated bill, which had an actual reading from some time ago. Previous reading. Same number.

Its most likely that you have an old analogue timerswitch which is set at the wrong time . this will skew your cheap 7 hours into a very useful time to take advantage of it rather than the dead of night. Is the night rate active now on your meter ? If you have an old mechanical meter , the little indicator window will be pointing towards the low figure by either an arrow or a red portion at the bottom towards norm. If this is the case its to your advantage to make better use of the cheap rate. The suppliers dont seem too concerned at when you get the cheap 7 hours. Its not at all unusual for the timer switch on these old meters to be out of synch with the usual 12.30 to 7.30 hours. I see thousands of these throughtout the year, its rare to find one at the correct time

The little arrow is strangely pointing to the norm dial. The meter says teleswitch. Looks pretty old.
  • if its a Radio Teleswitch, thats a different matter as they are usually correct in their timings. Yes you could have a problem of some sort if the timerswitch is operating ok. I think you should monitor the meter for a couple of days to see if you can work out when the night rate is active and to see if the day rate becomes active also. It could still be that your cheap 7 hours has been skewed into a good spot. If not , its a phone call to the supplier to report the meter

The day reading hasn't moved in months. I don't think just the time is wrong.

Call the supplier! Where's the fun in that
  • Ah well, best of luck. The suppliers are completely hopeless at twigging on to faulty meters , but theres a clause in your Terms and Conditions of supply that you inform them of any faults in the meter.

The arrow is now pointing up to the low numbers. The low numbers are also still clocking up. Basically the meter appears to be stuck on low regardless of time

Thats a rare fault, although I would nt expect any meter readers to be able to spot it, so it may be more common but not reported. You re getting 100% of your units now at the low rate. I dont think the suppliers would notice either. I know of an Npower electric meter which had stopped completely for 6 years in a clearly occupied property, having many meter readers checking the meter and still the occupier was billed only standing charges. So its now up to you to phone the supplier and report it. The backbilling rule would apply if you had known the meter was faulty but didnt report it, but that cant be proved
