    I'll be interested to see any calculations but for speed I definitely use the kettle. And not just for pasta but all sorts of veg too.

    It depends on...
    the cost per kWh of gas v. elec
    AND
    the efficiency of the heat transfer

    gas is cheaper
    but the element in the kettle is more efficient
    but you might end up heating more than is necessary in the kettle
    but you lose heat in transferring from kettle to pan

    The simplest way to test is to turn everything off, take meter readings, boil exact amounts of water by each method and take new readings and calculate the costs. But I'm not sure if a domestic meter has the accuracy to measure such small amounts!
