FAO Painters & decorators: Can i use any cheap white paint as an undercoat?

I have just got on the property ladder, well, i will have in a month lol and i need to paint the entire house (inside), the wall in the living room is really light so will i be ok to paint straight over it with Magnolia paint?

The bedrooms need painting, one is pink (!!!!!!!?) do you think i will need a undercoat on that as i want to paint it blue for my little 2 year old lad,

one is brown (!!!!!!!?) that'll need a undercoat wont it? as i want it magnolia,

one is blue, i may keep it like that if its in good enough condition.

Will i need to put a proper undercoat paint on these or will a cheap white paint be ok?

Any recommendations on brand names of paint that i should use? Or should i buy trade paint from wickes? I can get them in big 15L tins. Ideally i want the best stuff so i dont need to keep repainting over it. I know the 1 coat paints are no good so i know i will have to do atleast 2 coats (undercoat or white paint? and then the magnolia top coat?).

I will also be getting a plasterer in to do some replastering and EML repairs on one of the walls and i'll be filling in some holes myself with everbuild one hour caulk (magnolia colour) so will the new plaster cause any problems with the paint finish? i know the holes that i fill in will be ok as i'll be using the magnolia coloured caulk

Thanks in advance :)

Just use a cheap vinyl Matt white emulsion to go over the offensive colours before you put your chosen colours on. Depending how dark the colours are, you may need two coats before your preferred colour.

For your final colour, buy the best paint you can afford. Trade paints have a greater opacity so cover better. Cheap paints are watery so require more coats so it is false economy.

  • Which is best, i've been on wickes website and they have:

    trade paint,

    dulux paint,

so is the trade paint better then dulux paint?

from what i can see the colours are dulux from the diy range and a bit thinner than trade paint , i always go for the trade stuff as it can be thinned down , on colours such as you are trying to cover it would be better to use the trade stuff , go to a builders merchant for this unless wickes d a trade mixing service
