I know it doesn't work for big sums but should those be kept in cash long term?

If you're elderly then I'd say yes it's possily quite reasonable.
I look after 2 elderly family members who are 85 and 86.
Now of course I have no idea when they will die, but I'm certainly not prepared to take the risk of putting their money into stocks and shares.

So for lots of elderly people I'm afraid cash is often the only option.
They don't have the opportunity to recover from losses.

    Details please?

It was just a general statement but two specifically that have come up recently are Coventry and kent reliance.

I assume you mean fixed term accounts and not easy access? Just wondered what the exact rates were.

    Of the Nationwide 1.7%,
Is this linked to a current flexi account?

Not to open, but you would need another Nationwide account to withdraw (to pass on to your own bank) so something with decent interest and BACS would be worthwhile for a proportion of the cash.

I think the krbs was a 1 year fix, falling from 2.3% to 2.0% but the Coventry is a 30 day notice, 2.4% to 2.2%. The latter seemed notable in terms of not being available generally, and it was a few months ago, and indicated they were happy to keep the money they had without attracting anymore.

I've just started with Kent but always found Coventry very efficient with their best buy rates (paid my mortgage off with them many, many years ago). Yorkshire gets my vote for (not top of the tables too often) best long term forget about it rates without falling too much in general. I dithered and dithered about a fix and perhaps should have plumped for another couple.

Yes, no complaints though my personal opinion is that coventry's online security grid card game is a bit of a joke, I've rarely managed to get it to work for me.

    I vote Coventry the tops.
They have for instance a loyalty variable ISA paying 2.5% that accepts transfers in.
And usually when a fixed bond ends they offer something to tempt you to leave your money with them.
Always found that they keep you well informed regarding your accounts plus a monthly email reminding you to log in and check your accounts, good service.

I did have an ISA with KRBS when it was a Building Society but it`s now been amalgamated with US buyout group JC Flowers, much to the annoyance of it`s members.
