Emergency CC for someone with bad credit rating

in Credit cards
I am going on holiday with my family to the USA in a few weeks and would like to have a credit card with me for emergencies. My credit rating is very poor, having suffered redundancy amongst other things in the past few years. Happily things are much more secure now (hence the holiday) and I'm in the process of paying back my debt, but, the reality is I still owe a lot of money.
I have no CCJ's but am showing as default on some debt.
Current credit cards are with Virgin (MBNA) and Barclaycard (old EGG card) so I'm guessing they are a certain no no.
I'm not planning on using this card, it's merely in case my other card doesn't work for some reason, or if I need a chunk of money in an emergency whilst away. Although I appreciate that this makes no difference to the computer making the decision as to whether I get one.
Is there any point in trying to get one ? Has anyone else been in this situation ? and if so, what did you do ?

A subprime card would probably be your only option.
If accepted it would likely only be a small limit, but should be sufficient for emergencies.
Have a look here (includes some details about ages of most recent defaults likely to be accepted etc) - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/bad-credit-credit-cardsA smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
what's the status of the two you already have?0

Barclays shows as up to date. MBNA shows as default - for 2 years, I think this is because I'm paying the a minimum amount (but this has been agreed with them so unsure why ?). I have been paying them back for several months.0
