3 bedroom semi detached house - gas & electricity costs

I am panicking that my gas and electric costs seem to be very high and i'm not sure why they are.
3 bedroom semi with 2 adults and 1 child. Heating and hot water come one for a 2 hours in the morning - off all day - come on around 4pm and off again at 9pm. Weekends are similar.
Admittedly if we are home during the day on a weekend or for other reasons (my daughter was sick yesterday and couldn’t go into child care) we put the heating on during the day. as its very cold just now (Aberdeen - north east Scotland).
We pay £146 a month for the two. Just now we are debt about £80 but i expect that will sort itself over summer. The house is approx 30years old.
A friend who is living in a brand new 5 bed house (obviously much bigger) pays only £125 a month for both.
What’s going on?! Can anyone help?
Thanks

Check your old bills, has your usage increased? Make sure you're getting the best deal by using online comparison sites and switch if necessary.
What kind of boiler do you have? Insulation? What temperature is it set at? Do you switch it off if it gets too hot?
A brand new house will have up-to -date boiler, heating and insulation AND may not be that much bigger than yours.
Saying all that yours does seem expensive, I'm £80 a month for gas and electric and about 60 miles south of you. Our heating is on similar timings morning and evening but rarely during the day (even at weekends).0 -
£s is not a very good way of expressing your energy costs, it may or may not relate to how much you are actually using especially if you have had Estimated reads. How many kWh are you using daily / monthly / annually ?
I am just down the road west from you and pay £108 pm, from Nov-Mar we generally have the heating on 24/7, currently using 78kWh gas and 9 kWh electric daily in a 3 bed det. My daughter pays £150 pm in her 3 bed semi. I am £85 in credit after this month's bill and she is £15 in credit.0 -
My latest bill shows we used:
12.02 kWh / day electricity
93.56 kWh / day gas0 -
We are in a 3 bed semi with someone home all the time and our heating is set to 20 in day and 18 at night . I pay ATM 150 for both but I'm 50 ish in debit.Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0
