The worst thing is that a direct debit was set up on the account so they could have taken the money anytime:-)
No one in their right mind would take anyone to court for this amount. In terms of cost should the absolute happen is show the judge a copy of the direct debit that is still in place (bank should have a copy of it to show when started). The judge will just say you've already taken steps to pay it & tell ebay to well 'go away' no case to answer!
All this aside they're just going through the motions of any debt collection, scare mongering people into paying etc.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0 -
Write back and tell them that you have the money - please can they come and collect it at their convenience...0

Send them a payment for £2.55, forcing them to either write back to you asking for the right amount (boring) or cash your cheque then issue you with a refund for 10p, the cost of their time and raising a cheque for the refund will be nice revenge for the nasty letter.0

Normally ebay take their fees automatically once a month via direct debit, but it is posisble to make one off payments each month via paypal or bank transfer if you prefer.
If you have been selling for over a month or two you should have seen an invoice by now, they usually send it to your registered email address if it is small enough, larger invoices generate an e mail asking you to log into your account to view it.
You can check your current outstanding fees by logging into your account and checking. However, I find the way they show their fees as clear as mud, they seem to use no clear understandable figure for totalling up the fees, or maybe that is just me being dense?
