Laptop start up blank screen problem.

The laptop starts, asks for password then goes through the motion and I end up with a blank screen.
I've started successfully in safe mode, done a system restore and am at present running a malaware check, all in safe mode.
Any other ideas?

Managed to fix it.
Took battery off, held the on button down for 30 seconds. Connected mains but not laptop battery and started up the laptop. It worked. Reconnected battery and all is working.
