Yesterday, for the umpteenth time, my reasonably well behaved Labrador went off and rolled in this.. stuff, all down the side of his face, all over his collar.. disgusting. What follows is a freezing cold hosing off in the garden with doggy shampoo, a grumpy, wet and cold dog AND owner is the result!
I realise there must be an instinct driving this, but no amount of shouting while he's doing it seems to do anything. The usual training methods of using a long line etc seem a bit futile as this only happens about once or twice a month (buts it really foul when it does!).
Do I just have to accept that this is part of dog ownership or have any of you successfully put a stop to this behaviour?

Looking for the distinctive shoulder roll and screaming blue murder was my general MO. Only worked if said dog was close enough to grab. Long distance, no chance.
Then again, I am possibly the worlds worst dog trainer. Didn't manage to stop gitdog the other day and he was on a short lead. Rocked up at mothers for Sunday lunch with the dog, lead, collar, harness and me absolutely plastered in it. Twenty minutes of scrubbing the both of us outside before we were allowed in. Followed by a night of pointed comments that she could still smell us.
Oh the joys of dog ownership. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Same here, I'm afraid! As you say, that tell-tale dip of one shoulder, but you have to be looking in the right direction in the first place, not always possible if you have more than one dog!I want my sun-drenched, wind-swept Ingrid Bergman kiss, Not in the next life, I want it in this, I want it in this
Use your imagination, or you can borrow mine!0 -
I could never stop mine rolling in fox poo or dead fox, they seemed to treat it like the most seductive perfume in the world, the all time worst was when we went to the Northumbria coast and my dog found a decomposing seal to roll in.
I can vouch that decomposing seal has a very distinctive aroma, even after being hosed down twice the smell lingered in the car for weeks.0 -
My dog loves to roll in slugs dead or alive he doesn't care
they also stink.0 -
Yep, my Lab's the same. Fox poo or dead animals and she's straight in there. Tomato ketchup gets rid of the smell. Just rub some in and wipe off after washing the dog first.
Some people only exist as examples of what to avoid....0 -
The old labrador in the fox poo trick! Been there, done that! It was worse when we lived in the city, the fox poo there is so much worse than countryside fox poo! One tip - baking soda in water helps neutralise the smell after you've got rid of it which is a mission in itself because it's so bloomin' sticky!! Good luck - I have 9 and 7 year old labs and the 7 year old does it at least a couple times a month.0

There's a new spray you can keep on hand - you spray it on the poo and it breaks it down and gets rid of the smell too. I've seen it in action, it does work
