Can't declare SORN either by phone or online

Declared online for this vehicle last year but this year it said the renewal no. wasn't recognized. Tried with V5 no. but that wasn't recognized either. Tried by phone but it's fully automated, so no human to tell. If I go to a PO, won't "computer say no" for them too?

  • Its a constant thing now. When you declare SORN, it remains that way until you tax the vehicle.

I SORN'd a car recently and this sentence is in the email:

"The SORN will be valid until you tax, sell, permanently export or scrap the vehicle."

Have you got a local DVLA office you can check with?

Yeah as above, sorn is now continuous until you cancel it.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • So why have they sent me a reminder warning that sorn expires on 31 December?
  • If theyve done that you need to speak to someone in a local office, or write to DVLA

The requirement to renew a SORN declaration each year was only recently cancelled.
As the reminders can be processed some weeks in advance, there was an overlap period when reminders were sent, but not required.

So they know about this but instead of explaining along with the other possible reasons that pop up in red when a ref. is unrecognized, they simply let hundreds (maybe thousands) of people sweat it out worrying whether they'll be had up for non insurance?

It's highlighted in a box on the front page of the tax disc/SORN website...

What you have failed to mention is that said box is right at the foot of the page whereas the orange 'declare SORN' link is near the top, so why would you scroll down? Maybe you always scroll down and examine a website just on the off chance that the action requested in a reminder isn't actually required:rotfl:

Even if you click the SORN link right away without looking at the complete page - the 2nd paragraph on the SORN page you arrive on says quite clearly:

When SORN has been declared for a vehicle the registered keeper must ensure that it will not be used or kept on a public road until a new licence has been taken out. The declaration will be valid until the vehicle is re-licensed, sold, permanently exported or scrapped.

But then you maybe just always click on next instead of reading all the info on the page, on the off chance that nothing has changed since the last time you used the website. :rotfl:
