Hi Iam looking for a portfolio of about 5 or 6 shares to put into my ISA wrapper which is valued about £30000. I was thinking that Tesco, National Grid, maybe 2 for starters but would welcome ideas and thoughts about what sharesI should invest in for both income and growth.

tesco is struggling with declining market share
national grid is going to be hammered both due to costs and because of the failure to keep the lights on0 -

Diversity. Look at different sectors and, if possible, different geographical markets. Thus spreading the risk a little. Generic examples below.
Banking, insurance and finance.
Mining and oil.
Gas, electricity and water supply.
Retailers.
Communications.
Healthcare.
Chemical / Industrial.
Manufacturing.
Investment Trusts.
This list can be broadened further.
If you wanted a bank, do you want UK or overseas exposure? Lloyds v Standard Chartered. Insurance? Direct Line v Old Mutual.
Identify your sectors. Identify your international mix. Then narrow down your options from there.0 -

True, but isn't that reflected in the share price?“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” --Upton Sinclair0 -
Why do you think you can pick 6 shares which will perform well in the future when you have to ask down the pub (or this forum) for tips?Perhaps you should select 2 or 3 broad based investment trusts or share funds. Even that can be a toss-up which is why many people go with tracker funds.0
