Abbey giving problems proving identity

My brother recently got £16000 from a bond put into his abbey saver account with the intention of removing the money staright away to a better account at another bank, but for the last three days abbey have not let him take the money from the account.

He does not have a current passport or a drivers licence. Can anyone advise on where we stand on this as i feel they are purposley dragging things out.

He does have a passport from when he was 13, benefit letters, council tax bills and tenacy agreement with the council from when he moved into his flat 5 years ago.

What else can he do to sort this out?

He should ask them what documents they accept as proof of identity. A letter stating that he has been awarded a state benefit should prove satisfactory, as should a notice of coding from HMRC.

Not sure if he has a notice of coding due to being on incapacity benefit since he was 18.

He has plenty of recent letters from the benefits agency though. But thats not enough according to them.

  • Benefits agency letter could be acceptable but as has been said before, it is worth asking them what identification they require or can accept.

How did he manage to open the account in the first place?

The account was opened for him when his was 13, for the little bit of money my parents had left when they died.

They say they will only accept a current passport or driving license niether of which he has the money to get.

It seems silly that they won't accept his out of date passport as when he gets the chance to renew his passport that is all they will require to issue the new one.

Also surely the bank can do a check on his identy as that is what standard life did. The Account got passed onto him from standard life and they allowed him to withdraw the money.
