AskMID letter

Hi

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, wasn't sure if it fell under the other section!

My parents gave me their scooter, a 125 Piaggio as they bought a new one. Me and my other half did our CBTs and got insurance in 2012. He started to use it to get to work as I have my car and don't use it as much. So when the insurance renewal came up in October last year we put it as he's the main driver, as otherwise it felt like we were lying as I barely used it. I am the registered keeper of the bike, and if I remember rightly I selected "I am not the registered keeper of this vehicle" when I put the details in but I am going to double check this.

Today I've received a letter from AskMID stating that it doesn't appear on the database and I need to contact the insurance provider if it is insured, which it is, but as my other half is at work until late and they wont speak to me as I'm not the policy holder. What could be the problem? That it's in his name? I am a named driver on the policy, we don't live together and the scooter is generally kept at his which is listed on the insurance too. Any ideas? Sorry for rambling on just wanted to make sure I got it all down!

I've never heard of such a letter being sent from askMID but if it is genuine is it possible a direct debit has bounced if you're paying monthly? The registered keeper / main driver is irrelevant as the insurance is to the registration plate irrespective of who the actual keeper is.

Askmid wrote to you, are you sure it's not the dvla?

Seems a lot of trouble for them to go to for a vehicle that's fallen off their database.

Seems odd. I would have thought the DVLA would be the 1st contact as they will want to fine you for not insuring it or declaring SORN.

https://www.askmid.com/ownvehicle check that is it showing?

Just looked at askMID and they've apparently been doing this since June 2011 in an effort to combat uninsured vehicles on the road...?

  • Thanks for the replies guys

We paid it in full for the year so it's all paid for. The letter has both the AskMID and DVLA on the bottom. I've checked the website and it's showing as not registered. According to their letter only the insurance people can update the records. I can't think of a reason why they've not updated it, especially as they've had plenty of time. I'm quite thankful for the bad weather now as he's barely been able to go out on it for a ages!

It is probably just an admin mess up by your insurers that a phone call will sort.

Might be worth checking that the registration number on the insurance certificate is correct as that could be the root of the problem.

My dads car was not showing on the database for some time. At the last renewal he queried why it never appeared on it.

Seems someone mistyped the reg. Put a zero instead of the letter O (or the other way around)?
