Hi,
son has come home with saying he needs to make a powerpoint presentation......
we have "open office" installed on laptop-will there be a powerpoint type thing within that or do I have to find one to install/download?
if the latter, any recommendation for a FREE , safe site to use please?
we have windows 8 if that makes any difference.
thank you, thank you, thank you.

It's called Impress in the Open Office setup. If you haven't got it then download Libre Office instead. Same program but a little better to have. Also read the link below for the differences twixt Powerpoint and Impress.

Open Office includes Presentation (like powerpoint), you can also save any presentation as a powerpoint presentation, use the save as option and select one of the two powerpoint options in the file type box.Gas doc on the loose0

It matters not either way, but the actual separate application in Open/LibreOffice is called 'Impress', however, the link to it on the Open/LibreOffice launcher screen is called 'Presentation'.
Just a word of caution when using files created using Open/LibreOffice as they can have 'differences' when viewed in MS Office, despite being saved in the MS Office file formats. It would be advisable for your son to have a 'trial run' in PowerPoint, just to check everything looks the same, before showing the presentation.0 -
As EchoLocation says, you should check the end work as sometimes there can be a conflict between (twixt) MS and Libre Office. If your son does the presentation in Impress (or Presentation) he can then check it's correct by using a PowerPoint viewer, link below.

OK, sorry if I got the name wrong. It appears as the presentation item in the launcher - but I bow to you greater wisdom

Just what the world needs - more PowerPoint

Have a look at this for some tips on creating meaningful presentations:

And my tip: your son is the presentation, not the screen. People should be looking at him, listening to what he's saying, engaging with him.
The screen should just be there to support him, providing a visual illustration of a key point, or using a relevant image to set a mood.0
