Late payment marks on credit file-tricky circumstances

Options
Hi
My mortgage application went in on Monday but was declined due to 3 missed payments on my barclaycard last year. I had completely forgotten that last August a charge was made on my otherwise cleared barclaycard via iTunes (which was made by a friend and I was unaware of) for £6. As I hadn't been using my barclaycard when receiving the bills I had simply filed these it was only after 3 missed payments when I received a more formal looking letter I realised what had happened. I reported to barclaycard and they refunded the initial amount plus all missed payment charges which was about £30 and reassured me the matter was resolved however this is still on my credit file. I've got back in touch with barclaycard but they are digging there heels in about clearing from my credit file. Any advice?

When you first spoke to barclaycard did they ever specifically state what would be repoted on your credit file? or state that the missed payments would be removed?

Certainly worth trying to ask them to consider removing them - but if they choose not to they are within their rights, as obviously these were genuine missed payments.

Are you certain this alone has caused your mortgage application to be declined? if you cannot get the late payments removed as a goodwill gesture then you could perhaps try a different mortgage lender?

  • I don't remember them stating specifically they would be removed I possibly naively assumed they would be.

I'm fairly sure this is what has caused me to be declined as this is what my mortgage broker has advised. My current credit score is 995 which is pretty good so not sure what else's it could be.....

It seems fairly unusual that they would be the sole reason for the decline unless your application was already very borderline (not in terms of credit history or the score you can buy) but the whole of your financial circumstances.

  • The only other things I can think of is that I'm a first time buyer who's buying the property solely in my name.... I have a good sized deposit (just under 25% of property value) and my rent is pretty much the same as I'd pay in the mortgage repayments so affordable.

On my credit file there are no other highlighted red markers for me to look into. Can you think of anything else which would cause rejection? I'm not sure if I should keep trying to get this wiped off (the sticking point seems to be lack of evidence that I didn't make the iTunes purchase which I can understand) Or just try a different lender, I'm conscious I don't want to try to many as it'll damage my credit rating further....
    Thanks

Have you checked all 3 credit reference agencies?

The size of your deposit is good so its obviously not that. Is the amount you are borrowing not at the max compared to salary?

As you have a mortgage broker maybe chat through with them for an alternative lender less likely to be put off due to this small issue. Hopefully they can recommend someone so you are not making lots of applications.
