faulty Meter

We had an old disconnected supply reenergised late 2011 prior to startingup a new business. no discussion took place with the supplier (E-on) about a contract and we have paid our estimated bills upto May 2013 when we made a formal complaint as all our bills were estimated despite meter readers attending (their readings and our have been rejected by E-on) who have now finally changed the meter. Their customer service rep told me that as the meter was thought to be faulty (prior to the new one being fitted) they would not back date any energy and we could start a contract from the new meter being fitted which happened finally on 8/1/14. E-on are now seeking to back date our consumption 12 months based on 2 weeks of use as recorded on the new meter but have said they will back date a 24 month contract by 12 months - over a barrel or what? What is the correct legal position? I am aware we owe for electricity used but our business has grown considerably in the last 3 months and basing the back usage on the last 2 weeks is in accurate. So how do we go forward? We were given no info regarding costings, contract term etc when the supply was re-energised. Help - where do I go from here?

    Hi lily0175

I'd talk to our business complaints team about this. Contact details are on our website.

They'll investigate the circumstances behind the comments made to you and talk to the rep in question.

With faulty meters, we prefer to base any back billing on the previous history at a property. However, if the meter has been faulty for some time and sufficient historical usage data doesn't exist, we'll need to look at future usage. This will, though, be considered alongside industry averages for the type of property and purposes involved.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction.
