Depositing a cheque from abroad

I will be abroad for a year and in a few weeks I should get a cheque for my car tax refund/SORN.

I can get someone to open the envelope and give me the details written on the cheque, is it possible for me to deposit it into my bank account via online banking while I am outside the UK?

Also how long is the cheque valid for, does it expire if not deposited?

The cheque needs to be physically deposited with the bank. You can post a cheque to your bank. You could also ask a 3rd party to post it for you, or hand-deliver it to your bank. Your sort code and account number will be needed by the bank to credit the money to your account.

Cheques usually get honoured for 6 months from the date they have been issued.

Surprised you weren't offered / didn't accept a refund by bank transfer, btw.

    Thanks for the reply Archi,

I cancelled my car insurance last week and the remaining was credited back to my bank account earlier this week.

I also had a retainer held by my solicitor which was released last week and they paid it directly back into my bank account.

But I did not see this option on the Car Tax refund and SORN form.
They state that they send out a cheque 6-8 weeks after they receive the disc and form.

I can get my Mother to pay it into my bank and have left the sort code and account number with her but I did not want to bother her as they closed the local branch down and it is quite a trip for her to the nearest branch.

Your bank will no doubt accept postal deposits as well. Find out the postal address. Get a deposit slip and a address an envelope. Leave that with your mum.
