Insurance for 9 seater VW Transporter family vehicle

Options
Just wondering if anyone here has any tips for insuring a 9-seater VW Transporter that is used as the family 'car'. In effect it is a very large MPV! The problem is that I haven't been able to find anyone apart from VW Insurance to insure it with as it has more than 7 seats and it is not used as a commercial (business) vehicle. However, I have seen other VW Transporters on the road that are also being used as family vehicles.

Have you telephoned any brokers or insurance companies direct?

If not do so, that's tip number 1.
  • Athough it has 9 seats, it is actually an 8 seater as it is passenger seats + driver.
Go onto the T4 Forum as you will find it a very resourceful place for general information on your van as they have a huge following.

I insure mine via Glynwood 01527 591057 who placed the business with LV under a specialist deal they have with them. It is heavily modified/customised like many of the T4’s are and these are not an isse. I deal with a guy called Paul Bussey and I have been very happy with his service for the last two years, in fact I’ve sent a few people his way already.

I suspect they might not be able to place the Caravelle under this policy as just noticed mine has a maximum of 7 seats including driver in any layout. IF you don’t need all the seats then these are easily removed to satisfy that criteria so that could be an option for you. Ie if you only need 6 then three up front and three in the middle would be ideal. Remove the very rear seats and then have increased luggage space.

You could also try the followimg:

Thanks for those numbers. I'll try them later.
As for number of seats, I rarely have the back row in the van, so most of the time, it has only 6 seats (including driver). But on mentioning this to insurance companies, I've been told that they go on the number of passengers it was built to take, rather than the actual maximum number of passengers we actually use.

That is because you are talking to mainstream insurers who haven't got a clue and just do what he computer says.

If you approach Paul with a 6 seater T4 I don't you will have an issue.

Rear seat belt sets are in some demand. At least £25 a side plus somewhere between £50 and £100 for the rear bench.
