Tesco VOIP Handset

Hi all,

I am going to Barcelona for a long weekend tomorrow and I am staying in a hotel with free WiFi. I plan to take my laptop.

We might need to phone some friends on a UK mobile while we are there, so I would like to take a VOIP headset with me to do so.

I saw one in Tesco for £7.49 when I was shopping recently. Will this do? I have already got a SIPgate account that I set up a while ago to test it out, but never bought a proper headset for the computer, just used a mic and speakers - I don't have these sockets on my laptop so I need a USB handset really.

So, my question is: is the Tesco thing ok? I could set it up tonight, before we go.

Cheers...

There are other threads covering the use of the Tesco handset, not everyone has been able to use it with other VOIP systems, but at such a low price it's worth taking the risk. I think they will even refund you if you return it. If you do use it with Sipgate, you will probably need to change the audio device selection in Sipgate to USB Phone instead of Windows default, but don't expect the ringing to work.

Strange you say the laptop has no audio connections, have you looked carefully?
  • Hi,
Thanks. It's an ultraportable laptop so it only has a headphone socket.
I'll pop to Tesco in a few minutes now that the queues will have died down and will see if they still have it cheaply.
