Modest Investment

Options
Hi, totally new to this. Was a member of my company's share incentive scheme but left before the investment term ended. I know have a small refund (under £500) and would like to invest in something similar, topping up with £50 per month, some sort of share based fund I had thought.

I tried an ISA but with online access managed to spend as much as I saved so looking for something far more restrictive.

Not familiar with any of the financial terms etc so please be gentle!

Thanks.

When you say you had an ISA was that cash?

You can get a S&S ISA that meets your criteria. More info here

They are not the cheapest but have one of the best and more informative websites
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Yes, it is a cash isa and is far too accessible (online banking.) I like the above idea, I was looking at share index tracker funds but this seems to give more flexibility and thus less risky if diversified and managed well, which sadly makes them more expensive.

This is rated quite highly and is less expensive plus has access to 7000 funds (I can't post a url but basically it's the youinvest website) also minimum monthly dd is £25.

H&L seem to be changing their pricing structure yet again (March 2014) not clear whether you pay one annual fee or 2 - one for shares and another for 'holdings' but they seem quite well rated....

anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Why not initially try an Investment Trust savings plan, you can invest from as low as a tenner a month, ideally suited to those not needing an account holding multiple holdings. You could build up a decent amount and open a platform account later.

Here are a few to look at with their monthly minimum -

    £10 - Caledonia http://www.caledonia.com/our-business/invest-in-caledonia
    £20 - RIT Capital Partners http://www.ritcap.com/savings-scheme
    £50 - Blackrock Investment http://www.blackrock.co.uk/individual/about-investing/investment-trusts

Following a bit of research I found that they are consistently listed in the top 10 for DIY investments. They provide good resources including stock and company reports in addition to guidelines for investing and an explanation of terminology and principles.

Plus you have the flexibility of investing in funds (all comprehensively reported on) or buying and selling shares directly which I may do when I am a bit more confident. At the moment I've just selected a managed fund for now since I haven't a clue.

Cost-wise I thought they were reasonable - quite competitive in fact.

Good call. Thanks. As you can tell I am pleased with this choice :T
