Amazon Kindle

I was thinking about treating myself to one of these but my understanding of how they work is useless. Do I need to have internet at home to be able to access the internet/download books?

Yes. For downloading books you can read without internet after downloaded.

The basic one £69 only for books, you could go to a Wifi area, many coffee shops and other places have it and download.

Otherwise they are a tablet device so do need the internet.

Depends what kind of Kindle you get. The basic £69 one you would need an internet connection.

You can also get a Kindle with 3G where you don't need a connection to download although they are more expensive: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CUVGB6Y/ref=kin_comp_dk_kpw_img

A Kindle Fire is essentially a tablet so to get the most out of one of those, you would need an internet connection.

I bought the new Kindle Paperwhite in October. You may have a slight problem if you don't have internet at home. I have found that the wifi areas in cafes (particularly those provided by O2) don't have a very strong signal. My phone and iPod work ok but my kindle keeps telling me that I have no connection. It isn't a fault with the kindle as it works fine at home where I have wireless. Sometimes it displays a connection in cafes but if i try to use the wikipedia service or browse books on Kindle it fails.

Try browsing the Kindle forum on the Amazon site. You can ask more detailed questions about Kindle there.
