paying contracts instead of the company I signed the contract with

I contracted a company to do my loft conversion. The contract value is divided on about 8 payments, which time one phase is completed, the payment is requested.

My concern is that the company told me to pay onto their account payment A,C and E. All the others I am supposed to pay the onsite manager, who is not employed by the company(he is the builder). He then asked me to pay different accounts.

My question is: is there any problem/concern that I am paying the contractors directly? If something goes wrong, is the company which I signed the contract with, still the responsible?

I appreciate if you can help me or tell me who I should contact to clarify it.
