any recommendations for stainless steel pans for induction hob

hi

we r planning to change our hob from ceramic to induction and so looking for new pans. did the magnet test and existing ones dont work.

any recommendations on where to get a set of pans. budget around £75. looked at ikea ones but they have steel handles and steel lid which will get hot and so keen to avoid these, especially ones with steel lid.

I'm planning to get an induction hob fitted in the new kitchen this year, so I've been trying out pans on a cheap portable hob.

I got the Ikea Annons set for a fiver - they have plastic handles and actually work really well. I've also got a carbon steel wok, £9 from a Chinese supermarket, and again this works really well.

I've bought a couple of non-stick pans from Sainsburys which also work on induction. Again, it seems to be the cheapest ones that work on induction, even though it doesn't say on the packaging.

I've also just got an Andrew James griddle pan from Amazon - cost about £15 with delivery - which seems to work very well.

Previously, I've gone for hard-anodised or expensive pans for the gas hob, but the cheap ones I've got to test the induction out have performed surprisingly well. I know a lot of people recommend Circulon for induction, although I can't comment personally on those.

I bought Tefal Preference pan set and also a Stock pot. They are used Daily and put in the Dishwasher daily too. They come out looking as good as new, the bottoms don't discolour with an Induction Hob.

    These are what I bought

Although a slightly cheaper version available on Amazon at the moment

My Bosch hob isn't fitted, yet, but I bought Judge Vista pans from Amazon. These, as the name suggests, have glass lids and comfortable handles. I tried them in a local shop and found them solid, but not too heavy.

Prices vary depending on what sizes you require, but the most economical way is to buy a basic set and add extra pans. Mine were free, as I used e-vouchers earned from surveys.

I'm surprised that a wok is efficient on an induction hob, as woks don't have a flat base and heat is only transferred at contact points.

I purchased a judge vista poaching pan and the quality was terrible. A very expensive pan.

What was wrong with it ? I haven't used mine, but have checked them over and they look fine. There is a long guarantee with them.

I have bought a poaching pan, but it is the cheaper Horwood (same company) brand and is less substantial, but won't have the same amount of use.

Your induction hob is only as good as the pans you use on them. Do you really think you can get a good quality set of 4-5 pans for £75? Or Tesco value pans at £9 a pop?

    You cant.

John Lewis do a good set so do Le Crueset. If you are buying a BSH hob, their own pans sets at £135 are also very good.

There are 'induction' labelled pans for very little money but dont forget that induction hobs work on magnetic stainless steel. Cheaper pans will have a layer of this material sandwiched between other metals. Good pans will have a base made from this metal. The more of this metal you have in your pan base, the more heat you will induce into the pan and make it work faster and more efficiently.

  • I have a set of Judge Vista pans and I think they are brilliant - heavy enough bottoms that they hold heat well and distribute it evenly and they've never warped (even though I have a tendency to so things you're not supposed to like put cold water into a hot pan). I'd definitely recommend them but the set I got cost more than £75 (over £100 on offer at a Boundary Mills outlet shop)

I don't know if they do more than one line with differing quality? I haven't got a poaching pan but have three pots, a large frying pan and a grill pan all of which I have had for years and love.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

thanks. i can probably extend our budget to £100/£120 if i can get good quality pans.

any chance of a link to bosch ones? i googled and ones that came up didnt have any handles on pans so those are not for us.

did you mean these ones from JL? i did look at these but wasnt sure as the lids are stainless steel and bound to get hot!

  • We've got a couple of the Ikea pans with the metal handles and lids (used with a ceramic hob). We find them to be well made and good value. The handles or lid do not get too hot to handle if 'hot' at all.
