Faulty engagement ring - wont refund or accept faulty

My fianc!e purchased an engagement ring at xmas and we got engaged

The jewellers advised him he could purchase a ring and this could be resized by 4 sizes with no implication on quality

The ring was resized and was returned with a very thin band/ shank, the depth is inconsistent at various places and it looks awful for the price he paid

When we returned the ring the retailer was going to send or repair. As we did not trust them after they made such a mess We requested a refund under the sales of goods act but the retailer claims the ring is normal and is perfectly ok.
Head office have been involved and the ring was examined by their so called jewellery expert.

This is obviously not the case and we are beyond angry, you do not expect a brand new ring to be so thin and due to this will be unlikely to last and will wear after a short time.

Help, please what can we do!

Thanks in advance for ur help.

  • If they keep refusing then you'd need to go to court ultimately.

Did they size the ring up 4 sizes? If so guessing the goldsmith stretched it instead of piecing it.

If you like the ring as them to reshank it. This will involve cutting out the thin bit and replacing with a new piece of gold. You should not see the join.

Out of interest have a look at hallmarks and identify year assayed etc.

  • He paid with visa debit card.

The ring is platinum so we don't want it mucked about with. After they made a mess in the first place we have no faith they will get it right second time.

The customer service recieved has been non existent!
Totally horrified and speechless by the way they have dealt with our complaint.

Did you sign anything as regards the alteration, have you looked at the small print of that document?

Upload picture of the ring so we can see how bad it is.

I think this is a key question which you've not answered in your later post.

Sorry, I don't understand this comment.

You've already had it 'mucked about with' by having it resized. Re-shanking would return it to the state it was in when bought, but in the right size.

Yes it was resized up 4 sizes, they told us that platinum was added.

The jewellers is in current possession of the ring so im unable to look at the hallmark.

We were concerned that due to the metal it is, the more it was resized, altered etc the weaker the metal would become. I read that platinum resizing/altering can be very difficult. Hence this was why after it was done badly first time we opted for a refund rather then repair.

The issue is that to begin with the jewellers were going to send it off to be repaired, but becuase we insisted on a refund, they now claim it is perfectly ok and doesnt even need repairing.

We had a second verbal opinion from another jewellers who confirmed it was done badly prior to returning the ring. We didnt get anything in writing as did not anticipate such problems and now the jewellers are in possession of the ring.

We did sign any agreeement when it was sent off for resizing.

im not sure how u upload pictures on here.

Upload them to Photobucket or similar, then post a broken link (no http:// etc.) in a reply post here.

It'll have to be a broken link because you don't have a high enough post count to be able to post working links.
