External hard drive

  • Do you need USB 3.0?

Depending on which Transcend model you currently have you might be able to open it up and just replace the drive with a standard 2.5" or 3.5" internal drive. You might get 2TB for the same price.

Good call , but of course is it the drive that is dying or the logic board in the enclosure ?

You could just buy an enclosure and drive separately.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.
  • Sorry for the late reply.

The current portable, external hard drive (Transcend StoreJet) randomly ejects and I don't think there is a way to fix it. A friend of mine said that his one also had the same problem. Last time I connected the hard drive, my computer displayed this error, "OS X can’t repair the disk. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."

Although USB 3 isn't essential but it's a feature I would like as I will be keeping my photos in the external hard drive and editing them from there.

I know buying the drive and enclosure separately would be cheaper but would that set up be resistant to shocks? I'll put them in my rucksack so need to be able to withstand the forces when inside my bag.

keeping the masters on external drives isn't a good idea if they are important. external drives are best used for backup, and left at home.

buying a caddy and drive often works out more expensive, just buy the cheapest from the ones you've listed.
