Hi All,
I would appreciate some advice on the following situation.
In october I purchased a new Water Pump for my car, fitted it and everything worked well, until last week.
My car started over heating, so i ran some checks and removed the pump.
On the side of the pump is a shaft / Spline connector which connects inside of the Power Steering Pump to get its drive.
The issue with the New Pump is that the spline has sheered off, half of it is now stuck in the power steering pump, thus not allowing another pump to be fitted.
My question is whether I can claim from the supplier the following:
1) Costs of recovering the vehicle from the side of the road back to home. I see it that after 3 months this should not have failed and thus I would not have incurred these costs had it not failed.
2) If the failed shaft cannot be removed from the Power Steering pump can i claim the cost of a new one ? as this product has made the current one unusable.
3)Cost of removal and refitting of the replacement
Many thanks

Did you fit it yourself?
Are you a qualified mechanic?
If yes, and no, I can only see that as being an easy win for them I'm afraid.A computer once beat me at chess.
It was no match for me at kickboxing!0 -
If you bought as a consumer then all reasonable consequential costs can be recovered unless the retailer can "prove" that the failure was caused by incorrect fitting/abuse.
Within the first six months the presumption is that the fault was there at the point of sale and the retailer needs to prove otherwise, after that the burden of proof is reversed and the buyer needs to prove.
More generally, the idea of water pump driving PS pump is a new one on me, what car is it?
Does the water pump drive the PS pump or the other way round?0 -
See post number 2 this is the most relevent before the thread goes any further.
Also what caused the shaft to sheer off, maybe the same problem that caused the original water pump to fail? There may be other problems causing the water pumps to fail.0 -

It's the same setup on a mk3 mondeo.
Power steering pump and water pump slot together then one bolt to secure them. The PS pump is run of a small auxiliary belt on the n/s of the engine.0 -
so belt drives PS pump which then drives water pump via splined shaft?0
