claiming from last years statments

hi.
ive only recently heard of this. but thought i may give it a shot.
Last years whilst living on only benefits i was hit pretty hard with overdraft fees at £25 per time, took its toll. I'm not in a bad position now due to increase in child tax as my son is recieving DLA, even though i still have quite a lot of debts to pay i was wondering would i still be able to claim back the charges from last year ?

would i still be able to claim back the charges from last year ?

    On what basis?

Banks tend to only look at first time offenders and those in current financial hardship. Being on benefits is not a reason to get bank charges refunded. You have to fit their hardship criteria. That effectively means being in arrears or having priority debts (unpaid utilities) or in a cycle of charges you cannot get out of.

Have you read the MSE guide to reclaiming bank charges?
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges

I think it more or less covers all open avenue to reclaiming bank charges nowdays. (even if it was first written in it's latest guise about 4 years ago)

    Where have you been?

MSE Martin started his campaign to reclaim bank charges way back in 2005 - 2006, and initially it was very successful, especially following a ITV Tonight progamme and other media appearences in late 2006 explaining his ideas.

However it came to a shuddering halt a year or two later when everyone seemed to be joining the bandwagon and the banks decided a judicial review was needed to settle these exponentially increasing complaints once and for all, so they held nearly all such complaints pending that court decision.

In 2009, the Supreme Court gave their ruling and that effectively finally kiboshed the whole thing as it was then, leaving MSE Martin spitting with frustration.

The MSE article now available was written post the Supreme Court decision and explains the avenues now open ... which are very limited.
  • oh damn it, couple of years too late then, banks are robbing me blind yet wont give me a formal overdraft unless i pay for it, whats the point when im not going over all the time, just occasions then its 25-50 pound charge:mad:.

thanks for explaining it all tho
