car insurance after a blamless accident
Hi,hopeing someone can give me some advice or head me in the right direction to get some.
Basically our car that we had only had for 3 weeks got written off parked outside our house when we were out of the country. The police could not find a driver or even insurance for the car that crashed into ours. The insurance company (swift) paid out to us minus the excess. This all happened almost a year ago and we have been told we will be lucky to get the excess back. We have now had a quote back from swift for insureing our car this year and it is over 1000 pounds. So basically from us parking the car legally outside our home when we were away we have left with no excess back and a huge insurance hike. Any advice would be really really appreciated as we went through so much with the situation last year and it is now rearing its ugly head again !!!!!

"Fault" is an unfortunate choice of word and really should be moved away from.
Fault as far as an insurer is concerned is if they have a net outlay at the end of the claim and is nothing to do with blame. There can be a host of reasons why you bare no blame for an accident but end up having a fault claim - eg hit and run or uninsured drivers.
From what you say, the third party vehicle was identified but was uninsured and the driver never identified? In which case itll almost certainly remain a fault claim as they'll have no one to recoevr their outlay from (nor your excess)
There are some insurers that have things like "uninsured driver promise" etc that does reduce the impact of these things if you insure with them but you need to check the small print as not all are as wide as the strap line suggests and of cause some promises only remain in play if you stay with them0 -
Did they make a claim from the MIB? http://www.mib.org.uk/Home/en/default.htm
If so I believe they can take a while but if successful, you may eventually get the excess back. worth chasing up just to see what/if anything was done.
Do you have protected NCD? If not, how much do you have?
What is your new car? Maybe Swift don't like it.
Definitely check that Swift consider the case closed though as that will help you shop around for a more competitive quote.
Finally, anything else that could be jacking it up? Any other recent claims? Points etc? What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

Unfortunately you now have one claim against your name so premiums will go up. Best advice is to shop around as you may be able to find cheaper cover with a different insurance company.
As there was no other party identified in this accident for you to claim back your excess from then you are left having to pay this to your insurer as per your contract.
You could try posting your question on the insurance board on here but I suspect they won't tell you much different. Unfortunately you have been the victim of a 'hit and run' accident with no responsible party identified."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0
