Extending validity of personal plate

Apologies as its not very MSE but wonder if anyone can answer. I have a 13 plate not assigned to a vehicle yet whose validity expires at the end of next month. I know I can extend this for a max of 3 years (in total) but can I do this on a year by year basis 3 times or just a 1 time extension for 1,2 or 3 years? Can't find the answer on the dvla website.

You can put it on retention for a year. £25 per year.

Yes but if it is not assigned by March 2017 it goes back to the dvla.

Yes you can do year by year. You'll get the reminder before it expires and it will cost another £25.
From what I know, there is currently no limit on how many times you do this. As long as you fill in the paperwork and pay the £25, it will continue to extend on a yearly basis.

I did look somewhere else and that was the impression I got. You just have to watch everything like a hawk these days but I think you are right.
