Recovery Partition / Disc - Win 8

We have his and hers Dell XPS-12 Ultrabooks. They were supplied with Windows 8 but I have since downloaded the Windows Update to 8.1 on both.
If I create a backup of the Recovery Partition to a USB Flash Drive now, will that reflect the change to 8.1 or does the Recovery Partition remain just as Dell created it with 8.0?

backup the lot to an external hard disk (safer and bigger than flash drives) as a disk image (not clone), and create a macrium recovery disc, then you can recover both systems to the state they are now.

Although using the Windows utility, not macrium, I do regularly backup an entire disk image to my many external hard drives (belt and braces man here), but as far as I can see W8 only offers a Flash Drive as a backup source (ETA I meant destination) for the Recovery Partition. I was creating one this afternoon and it got me thinking, hence my OP.

backup source? or destination
macrium is more flexible, you can do individual partitions (eg recovery) or the whole thing!!

Yes. a typo from a tired brain, I did mean 'destination'. I may well try Macrium, it looks rather like Norton Ghost which I used to use with XP in that it gives access to individual files from an image.... I've seen posts on other Forums which suggest people have had problems using the Windows-created Recovery Drive if the Recovery Partition is damaged or deleted.
I've not tried this scenario myself, but I would certainly consider using Macrium as suggested, in addition to the Windows version.0
