  • Wow that's a hard one! I'd suggest ringing your local registry office they will be able to advise. I know that we had to give notice in the town we're both from despite getting married in another town.

You each give notice within the district you reside. Go on your local authority website and search for notice to marry.

If you intend to marry elsewhere you'll have to contact that local authority to arrange a registrar for your ceremony.

Easy one for me to answer because we've had to do this. I live in Wigan and he lives in Rochdale. I had to give notice in Wigan and he had to give notice in Rochdale when you get your license you then take it to where your getting married (c) in your case.

    Hope that helps

How long does it take for your license to marry to come through? Thanks Steph x

It's displayed for 16 days and then if nobody objects (!) the license is granted. We opted to pay an extra £1 for our local office to send it straight to the registrar where we are getting married.

Really? We had something similar but luckily he moved in with me so we ended up both in the same place but most of giving notice is proving that you know each other (a load of rubbish unless one of you appears foreign as far as I can tell...) so how do you do that in different offices! But if you've done it, you'd know better than I!

  • We live in Cumbria, and I have found out Cumbria is now considered the same district so we can give notice in the same office, so we are doing that :)

Yep, his district is classed as Rochdale mine is Greater Manchester :) we've been together for 7 years, just because we don't live together doesn't mean we don't know everything about one another. He works nights so if I lived with him I'd be stuck in with his dad every night and wouldn't see any more of him than I do now. So I still live with my parents and will be moving in with him slowly for the next few weeks before the wedding :)

He had to answer questions about me and I had to answer questions about him I guess they matched :)
  • I got really nervous when I was being asked the questions, particularly the ones about my dad - I hadn't been expecting that so started to think I was going to be asked what OH's dad did for a living and couldn't remember! The rest of it went relatively smoothly though.

Also my tip is ring the registry office where you're getting married ASAP (if you haven't already) and check they've got time slots free on your date! We gave notice in Lewisham but are getting married in York, and when I went to a wedding fair in York I was told by the York registrar that we had to give notice in Lewisham first, then book a time with the York registrar to get married. The day we gave notice in Lewisham OH got a phone call from the York registrar saying 'yeah you should have phoned us first, we've only got two slots left on your date'. Thankfully we got one - it's later than we'd have liked but at least we're still getting married! - but it was a proper  moment.

  • Hi Minerva :)

We've already booked the time and day luckily! Yes I'm getting nervous about their questions! But like OH said we're not a fake couple so we will know the answers x
