Brown Patch

Options
Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone can give me any advice. A good few months ago i noticed a sort of light brown patch coming throught the ceiling in the living room. My partner suggested that it could be the en-suite shower so i took all the seal off and re - did it and painted the ceiling but it now appears to be coming back throught the ceiling again? The ceiling doesn't seem soft it just has the stain. I have looked under the shower and i can't see any leeks but it is a very small space and very dark, and i have noticed the floor board creeking more when you go to get in the shower - does anyone have any suggestions of what to do next? Do i have to call a plumber? What types of problems could i face and at what cost? As of friday i am also redundant from work with no job lined up yet so a bit skint to say the least!

Have you phoned your insurers to see if you are covered for leaks in case that is what it is. They should be able to tell you what to do first.

It might have leaked in the past but it doesnt mean its leaking now

I got brown patches all over my ceiling and normal emulsion doesnt do the job of covering it, the stain always comes through

Put some white gloss on the patch and then paint over with emulsion ...........the patch shouldnt come through that

Might be worth trying that first and if it still comes through..then there maybe a leak there

Def agree with tododo, seal the stain first with an oil based paint, then emulsion.

You can also buy a spray can of Stain Stop, I think it could be made by Polycell, Ronseal or someone like that

Seal the stains with oilbase undercoat, this is more a matt paint, and when you come to emulsioning the ceiling the emulsion will adhere to it better than gloss.
  • Thanks for the response guys i will try an oil based paint first then.

    Cheers!
