Help!

I have lived here for 3 years and have been using the prepayment cards of the previous owner since I moved in. My gas card snapped, so I rang the number on the back for a new one (Npower) and they said I am not with them, im with 'Utilita'. I knew this company had knocked on my door over a year before, but I never heard from them again and nothing changed with the meters and/or cards. Npower said I could switch to them and then get a new card, to which I agreed. I got a letter from them yesterday saying my current supplier has refused the request to transfer and that my two options are to pay what I owe and then transfer or transfer my debt. What debt? It's prepayment! And I never knew I was with this company! What can I do???

You have not paid Utilita anything, you have been paying NPower by topping up their card. You should never have been topping up the previous owner's card and you may have been paying off debt their debt, you have never been their customer officially. This is going to take some time to sort out, you need to reclaim the money paid to NPower and pay it to Utilita. Good luck with that.
