What difference would it make? A payment plan is not based on actual future meter readings. You were free to make payments as and when you like based on that same prediction.

It is illegal for you to not have access to your meter. Your complaint is with your landlord, not with your energy supplier. That is the primary concern that you should be addressing.

I'm sorry, but what difference would what make?

It's illegal for me to be able to access other people's meters.

Regardless, I'm asking for advice on this bill not to argue about whether or not I have access to my meter - whether I had access or not would not have helped me in this situation.

Pardon me for being misled by what you wrote in you first post:
"I thought it'd be £150 as usual, but instead the new bill has come out at £400"

Yes it would. because you would not have had to 'guess' your bill, with the inevitable consequences. You have a legal right to access your own meter, so the presence of other meters is not relevant. If the LL insist on this being done 'by appointment', with someone unlocking the access in your presence, so be it. They cannot deny you reasonable access (i.e. a least every 3 months), so enforce your rights.
I'm unclear as to why your miscalculation is so great, do you know your annual kWh usage, and is it consistent? £150 for a winter quarter bill is simply not realistic, that's only about £12.50 per week. You'd surely be better on monthly DD to even out your billing across the year.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You can lead a horse to water ...................
  • you say you can't phone but said you emailed them, so clearly you have access to the internet, in which case you CAN pay monthly online what you can , you don't have to wait for the bill. Are you able to provide a meter reading at all after arranging with the landlord to come and open the meter ? (which they legally have to do)
